A new family pet

Question: We just picked up a gorgeous new bitzer puppy – a cross between a kelpie and a border collie – on our way back from a holiday to SA after seeing a sign on the road. We couldn’t resist and he’s fitting into the family so well. What things do we need to do for our Scooby-Doo?

Answer: Any new pup needs to be protected against worms, fleas, heartworm and viral diseases. Worm him straight away and book him in to see the vet for vaccines and a check-up.

Next, start him on a premium dry food and book him into puppy preschool. Socialisation is important before 16 weeks, so if you know any healthy, vaccinated dogs, make sure he gets to spend time with them. Finally, give him lots of love and attention — and have fun!
