Baby knits

A great knitted ensemble for baby to wear - a cute jumper with matching leggings and bootees.

Materials
Cleckheaton Babysoft 4ply (25g balls)
Jumper: Main Colour (MC): 3 (3, 4) balls; Contrast (C): 2 (2, 2) balls.
Leggings: Main Colour (MC): 4 (4, 5) balls. Contrast (C): 1 (1, 1) ball.
Bootees: Main Colour (MC): 1 (1 1) ball. Contrast (C): small amount, all sizes.
One pair each 3.25mm and 2.75mm knitting needles.
Three stitch holders.
Six buttons for jumper.
Three lengths round elastic for leggings.
Length of ribbon for bootees.

Measurements
Jumper: To fit chest: 41 (46, 51) cm. Actual measurement: 44 (49, 54) cm.
Length to back neck: 21 (24, 27) cm. Sleeve seam: 12.5 (15, 18) cm.
Leggings: Outside leg length: 29 (32, 35) cm.
Bootees: Foot length (approx): 8 (8.5, 9) cm.
Abbreviations. alt: alternate; cm: centimetres; cont: continue; dec: decrease; foll: following; ; inc: increase (by working into front and back of next stitch; include: inclusive; K: Knit; P: purl; patt: pattern; ; psso: pass slip stitch over rem: remaining; rep: repeat; sl: slip; st/s: stitch/es; st st: stocking st; tbl: through back of loop; tog: together; ybk: yarn back; yft: yarn front.
Tension
30 sts to 10cm over st st, using 3.25mm needles.

JUMPER BACK
Using 2.75mm needles and MC, cast on 63 (71, 79) sts.
1st row. K2, *P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
2nd row. K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows 4 times, inc 4 sts evenly across last row … 67 (75, 83) sts.
Change to 3.25mm needles.
** Work 2 rows st st (1 row K, 1 row P).
Beg patt. Using C, work 2 rows garter st (every row K).
Using MC, 3rd row. K3, *sl 1, K3, rep from * to end.
Using MC, 4th row. P3, *sl 1, P3, rep from * to end ****
Using MC, work 4 rows st st.
Using C, work 2 rows garter st.
Using MC, 11th row. K1, sl 1, *K3, sl 1, rep from * to last st, K1.
Using MC, 12th row. P1, sl 1, *P3, sl 1, rep from * to last st, P1.
Using MC, work 4 rows st st.
Last 16 rows form 1st patt. ** Cont in patt until work measures (approx) 11 (14, 16) cm from beg, ending with 4 rows MC.
Using C, work 2 rows garter st.
Using MC, work 2 rows st st.
Using C, work 2 rows garter st.
Using MC, rep 3rd and 4th rows twice.
Using C, rep 11th and 12th rows once.
Using MC, rep 3rd row once.
Cont in st st (beg with a purl row) until work measures 19 (22, 25) cm from beg, ending with a purl row.

UPPER BAND
Using C, work 16 rows rib as for lower band. Cast off loosely in rib.

FRONT
Work as for Back until there are 10 (12, 12) rows less than Back to Upper Band.

SHAPE NECK
Next row. K25 (29, 32) turn.

Dec 1 st at neck edge in alt rows 3 (4, 4) times ... 22 (25, 28) sts.
Work 3 rows. Leave sts on a stitch holder.
Slip next 17 (17, 19) sts onto a stitch holder and leave. Join yarn to rem sts and complete other side to correspond.

SLEEVES
Using 2.75mm needles and MC, cast on 35 (37, 39) sts.
Work 12 rows rib as for lower band of Back, inc 20 (22, 24) sts evenly across last row … 55 (59, 63) sts.
Change to 3.25mm needles.
Rep from ** to ** of Back once. Rep last 16 rows once.
Using MC, cont in st st until work measures 12.5 (15, 18) cm from beg. Ending with a purl row.

SHAPE TOP
Cast off 5 (5, 6) sts at beg of next 8 rows. Cast off.

FRONT UPPERBAND
With right side facing, using 3.25mm needles and C, knit up 77 (87, 95) sts evenly along top of Front, including sts from stitch holders.
Work 7 rows rib as for lower band of Back, beg with a 2nd row.
Next row. Rib 5 (4, 5) [cast off 2 sts, rib 5 (7, 8)] 3 times, rib 30 (32, 33), [cast off 2 sts, rib 5 (7, 8)] twice, cast off 2 sts, rib 5 (4, 5).
Next row. Rib 5 (4, 5) [cast on 2 sts, rib 5 (7, 8) 3 times, rib 30 (32, 33), [cast on 2 sts, rib 5 (7, 8)] twice, cast on 2 sts, rib 5 (4, 5). 6 buttonholes.
Work 6 rows rib. Cast off loosely in rib.

TO MAKE UP
Slip stitch edges of Upperbands on Back and Front together, so that Front is overlapping Back. Using Matress Stitch, sew in sleeves placing centre of sleeves to shoulder seams. Join side and sleeve seams.
Sew on buttons.

LEGGINGS
Right Leg (beg at ankle) Using 2.75mm needles and MC, cast on 43 (47, 51) sts.
Work 12 rows rib as for lower band of Back of jumper, inc 12 sts evenly across last row … 55 (59, 63) sts.
Change to 3.25mm needles, and work 4 rows st st.
Work 24 rows 1st patt as for back of jumper AT SAME TIME, inc 1 st at each end of 13th and foll alt rows until there are 67 (71, 75) sts.
Using MC, work in st st, inc 1 st at each end of next and foll alt (alt, 3rd) rows until there are 83 (79, 95) sts, 1st and 2nd Sizes Only - then in foll 3rd rows until there are 87 (91) sts.
All sizes. Cont in st st until side edge measures 15.5 (17.5, 19.5) cm from beg, ending with a purl row.***
Tie a coloured thread at beg of last row to denote back edge.
Cont in st st until work measures 13 (14, 16) cm from coloured thread, ending with a knit row.
Note. When turning, take yarn under needle and onto other side of work, slip next st onto right hand needle, take yarn under needles and back to original position, slip st back onto left hand needle, then turn and proceed as instructed. This avoids holes in work.
1st row. P14 (16, 18), turn.
2nd and alt rows. Knit.
3rd row. P21 (23, 25), turn.
5th row. P28 (30, 32), turn.
Cont turning in this manner, working 7 sts more in alt rows, until the row "P70 (72, 74), turn" has been worked.
Work 2 rows st st.
Change to 2.75mm needles and work in rib as for Lower Band of Back of jumper for 3cm, ending with a 2nd row. Cast off loosely in rib.

LEFT LEG
Work as for Right Leg to ***.
Tie a coloured thread at end of last row to denote back edge.
Cont in st st until work measures 13 (14, 16) cm from coloured thread, ending with a purl row.
Work turnings as for Right Leg, working knit in place of purl and purl in place of knit. Complete as for Right Leg.

TO MAKE UP
Using Matress Stitch, join back and front and leg seams. Thread elastic through 3 rows of rib at waist.

BOOTEES
Note. For slightly smaller bootees, use one size smaller needles than those which give you the correct tension.
Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 37 sts.
1st row. (K1, inc in next st, K15, inc in next st) twice, K1.
2nd and alt rows. Knit.
3rd row. (K1, inc in next st, K17, inc in next st) twice. K1.
5th row. (K1, inc in next st, K19, inc in next st) twice, K1.
7th row. (K1, inc in next st, K21, inc in next st) twice, K1.
9th row. (K1, inc in next st, K23, inc in next st) twice, K1.
10th row. K2tog, K53, K2tog … 55 sts.
Rep from ** to **** of Back of jumper.
Work 2 rows st st.

SHAPE INSTEP
1st row. K32, K2togtbl, turn.
2nd row. Sl 1, P9, P2tog, turn.
3rd row. Sl 1, K9, K2togtbl, turn.
4th row. As 2nd row.
Rep 3rd and 4th rows until 39 sts rem (15 sts at each side of instep).
Next row. Sl 1, K24.
Next row. Purl across all sts.
Work 2 rows st st.

ANKLE
Ribbonhole row. K1, *yfwd, K2tog, rep from * to end.
Next row. Purl.
Work 24 rows rib as for lower band of Back of jumper. Cast off loosely in rib.

TO MAKE UP
Using a flat seam, join foot and back seam. Thread ribbon through eyelet holes and tie in a bow as illustrated.
Fold rib section in half onto right side.
