Sophia Loren speaks about the pain of suffering two miscarriages

Actress Sophia Loren is widely-regarded as one of the most beautiful and successful women in Hollywood, yet the star has revealed her life has come with heartache.

The 80-year-old recently opened up about miscarrying two babies before giving birth to her son, Carlo in 1980.

Sophia told the Daily Mail that her desire to have children became an obsession as she approached her 30s.

“I simply loved children. On the sets of my movies, I’d befriend the child actors and then stay in touch with them long after shooting had finished,” she said.

The actress revealed that she was taken to hospital after filming a scene for a movie in Italy.

“That first night in Milan, I felt a terrible pain,” she told the Daily Mail. “As I got into the hotel lift, I almost fainted. I can still see myself lying on that hospital bed, under strip lighting, surrounded by white walls, and with the smell of disinfectant penetrating my every cell and piercing my heart.

“Four years later, I got pregnant again while making More Than A Miracle,” she said. But the Hollywood beauty miscarried a second time. “The doctor was called but took two hours to get to the hospital. ‘Signora,’ he told me, ‘you no doubt have excellent hips, and you’re a beautiful woman, but you will never have a child.’”

Sophia went on to have two children.
