George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin Clooney made a joint appearance in New York on Tuesday night to commemorate the Armenian genocide at the 100 LIVES event.

The actor and the human rights lawyer showed their support for the initiative which aims to commemorate those who worked to save Armenian lives during the country’s genocide under the Ottoman government 100 years ago.

George, 53, took to the stage at the event with the 100 LIVES co-founder, Ruben Vardanyan to address what could be done to prevent future human rights violations from happening again.

“I am honoured to be associated with 100 LIVES as it shares a common mission with my foundation, Not On Our Watch, to focus global attention on the impact of genocide as well as putting resources towards ending mass atrocities around the world,” the actor said in a press release.”It should weigh heavily on all of us that genocide still takes place today.”

“We have to tackle this head on – as individuals, as communities and as governments,” he continued.

Clooney announced he has joined the committee for the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity – an award which will seek to recognise those who put themselves at risk for others to end cruelty across the globe.

George and Amal have been basing themselves in New York of late as they work on their respective projects on the east coast.

Amal, 37, recently revealed to PEOPLE magazine she would be joining Columbia University for the school’s spring semester as a visiting faculty member and as a senior fellow with the Law School’s Human Rights Institute.

“I look forward to getting to know the next generation of human rights advocates studying here,” Clooney said in a statement.

While Amal focuses on her academic career, her husband will be spending his time in the city filming New York-based movie Monster Money, which also stars Julia Roberts and will be directed by Jodie Foster.

Dressed in a navy suit, George, 53 had his wife Amal, 37, wearing a delicate blue cut-out dress, supporting him from the audience during his talk with 100 LIVE co-founder, Ruben Vardanyan.
