Appearing on the cover of the August issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, Mirren, who is the star of the Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey-produced The Hundred Foot Journey, encourages women to stay single for as long as possible.

“My husband [Taylor Hackford] went through two marriages before we got together,” she says in The Weekly. “We didn’t get married for 15 years [after] we got together. I do believe it’s a good way to go.”

The actress, who recently turned 69, also says the institution of marriage wasn’t something she believed in.

“I never saw the point of it, until a financial advisor told me that it would be better. Once he told me how much money we’d be saving, I was on board immediately,” she says.

“As you get older, wills, estate planning, what do we do? We realised it was going to be so much cleaner if we got married. It was economic reasons, really.”
