Jill Meagher's killer appeals life sentence

The man who raped and killed Jill Meagher in a brutal attack that shocked the nation is appealing his life sentence for murder.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, was sentenced to life in jail, with a non-parole period of 35 years, for the attack on the popular ABC employee in Melbourne last year.

Bayley admitted to raping and killing the 29-year-old, then burying her body near a dirt road on the outskirts of Melbourne.

The murder was described as among the worst in Victorian history, sending shockwaves around the country.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Nettle described the rape as “savage and degrading”, while the murder was “among the worst kind conceivable”.

Bayley was on parole for prior rape convictions when he attacked Meagher, sparking public outrage. He wouldn’t have been given parole if he hadn’t pleaded guilty, the judge said.

Chilling CCTV footage showed Meagher’s last moments walking home after an evening out with friends before being pursued by Bayley.

The Victorian Supreme Court yesterday confirmed Bayley had launched an appeal against his sentence.
