Sam Armytage reveals her body image struggle

Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage has revealed her body image struggle as a teenager.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph’s TV Guide, the 37-year-old television presenter said: “If you’re not entirely beautiful and stick thin, like I wasn’t, it can be bloody awful,” she said of her early adolescent years.

Sam has previously spoken to The Weekly about the interest in her appearance and being constantly labelled ‘curvy’.

“It took me a while to get used to the interest in me being a size 12 and then I looked around and thought maybe there aren’t any other size 12s around. Maybe it’s because I’ve got boobs,” she said in The Weekly’s September issue.

Growing up with her two younger siblings on a sheep and cattle property, Sam was a sporty kid who loved skiing and horse-riding. She said she added a few extra kilograms while participating in toast-eating competitions at boarding school, but never really thought about her weight too much until Dancing With The Stars when her image was debated online.

“I guess I did take a step back and go, wow, am I horrendous? And then it took me probably a few years to go, bugger off everybody, this is who I am. I’m healthy, I’m strong, I can move my furniture around if I don’t like the way the room is set. I never get sick, I’m happy”.

“They keep prefixing me with ‘curvy’ and that word annoys me a little bit. I don’t think they always mean that in a terribly nice way, but if normal women out there respond well – and I know they do because they come up to me in the street and tell me – then I think that’s fabulous.”

The beautiful blonde breakfast host was recently targeted in an article about her style and appearance, which she called “bullying”.

She called the newspaper piece by a gossip columnist “cowardly and mean” for running a series of old and unflattering paparazzi images.
