Senator Jacqui Lambie has announced she has quit the Palmer United Party (PUP).

She will now sit as an independent in the senate.

“My resignation today will end that damaging speculation and uncertainty,” she reportedly told parliament.

“I must be free to vote in the Senate in the best interest of Tasmanians”.

Ms Lambie spent the weekend weighing up her options in her home state. Her decision follows the move by Clive Palmer, to remove her as deputy leader of the PUP last week.

Mr Palmer said in a statement on Wednesday that Senator Lambie had failed to attend the last three parliamentary party meetings.

“At no time has Jacqui Lambie ever brought a resolution to the party meeting in relation to Tasmania or veterans,” he said.
