Cricketer Phil Hughes remains in a critical condition at St Vincent's Hospital.

The 25-year-old was rushed by ambulance to at St Vincent’s Hospital and immediately underwent surgery to relieve pressure on the brain after being struck in the head by a ball from New South Wales bowler Sean Abbott .

Abbott and other cricketers rushed to Hughes side and called for medical attention.

NSW team doctor John Orchard performed CPR on the field and paramedics reportedly ventilated and intubated Hughes at the scene.

On Wednesday morning the Australian team doctor Peter Brukner addressed the media to give an update.

“Phil remains in a critical condition,” Dr Brukner said.

“He will have further scans later on today and we hope to be able to provide you with some more information following the scans.”

Hughes was taken from the field via medicab.

In the wake of the incident the current round of Sheffield Shield matches have been abandoned entirely.

ABC Cricket commentator Jim Maxwell has described Phillip Hughes’ injury as a ‘horribly fluky’ occurrence.

“Phillip Hughes has ducked and weaved and hooked many short balls in his illustrious but brief career,” Maxwell told the ABC.

“He’s played 26 Test matches, he’s been in and out of the side about five times since that extraordinary series in South Africa when he was the youngest player to get 100 in each innings of a Test match.

“I think he was about to be named as Michael Clarke’s replacement in the Australian team.”

Shaken: Micheal Clarke was seen arriving at the hospital at 7:30am this morning.

Aussie skipper Michael Clarke rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital when he heard the news and was reportedly there to help support the Hughes family until late on Tuesday night and seen returning again early Wednesday morning.

Hughes’ mother and sister were at the SCG watching the match between South Australia and New South Wales when the incident occurred and were by Phil’s side at the hospital.

As the news of the injury quickly broke fans and fellow cricketers including Dave Warne, Peter Siddle and Australian coach Darren Lehmann took to social media to show their support.

Many have also rallied around Sean Abbott and Cricket Australia says it is offering the New South Wales bowler counselling over the incident.
