Adventure enthusiasts have conquered most of the world’s terrain on all types of big and high-end motorcycles, but it’s less likely to be done on a postie bike.

That’s the view of Jacqui Kennedy, who is currently at a forced pit-stop halfway through circumnavigating Australia on a small Honda CT110.

In eight months on the road, the 50-year-old has spanned vast parts of each state – 22,000 kilometres at 70km/h – taking photos of “interesting and unique letterboxes … it is a postie bike after all”, she says.

Kennedy is also taking the opportunity to reconnect with places like Tasmania’s Franklin River, where she was arrested fighting for its preservation 31 years ago.

The Sydneysider describes being home while recovering from a hysterectomy as merely a “minor interruption”. The journey will restart in Perth next month, before crossing the Nullarbor, heading up remote country into Queensland along the Birdsville or Strzelecki Track and rounding out through Cape York later in the year.

Having taken a scooter up the Swiss Alps in 2006, Kennedy wanted a new challenge and hopes to reach beyond her growing following in the motorcycling fraternity to inspire older women to explore Australia.

“There are a lot of adventures to be had and people are so open – you don’t have to wait to be a grey nomad, just get out there and do it,” she said.
